PROGRAM NOTE

Open Weave belongs to a series of works in which I explore single lines of music jointly produced by multiple instruments in strict heterophonic textures.

Fluid leadership roles within groups are fascinating, and beautiful, and politically imperative to our survival; music in which all the players are strictly bound to a single line offers a uniquely transparent view into these exchanges of authority. The individuals are clear, but so is their submission to the process of finding out and rendering partial views of the thing. It’s up to the rest of us to shade it in.
