Broad Reach (2018)

for percussion ensemble (12-16 players), indoor or outdoor performance, ca. 7 minutes

Commissioned in 2018 by The Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar and The Massachusetts Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society. Premiered at Lincoln Center, 20 July 2018.

Instrumentation

• 2 Washboards, 2 Tambourines, 2 Wood Chimes (ossia 1 Wood Chimes), 2 Wind Chimes (ossia 1 Wind Chimes)

• 4 sets of six metal pipes tuned to C#-5, D-5, E-5, F-5, F#-5, and G-5

• 4 sets of six wood planks tuned to C#-5, D-5, E-5, F-5, F#-5, and G-5

• 4 sets of six Boomwhackers or plastic tubes tuned to C#, D, E, F, F#, and G

• 2 Glockenspiels

Program Note

The resonating pipes, planks, and tubes of the ensemble are tuned to receive and rebroadcast melodic threads wafting across the performance space. Sometimes we only get partial glimpses of these lines, but other times the whole ensemble seems to sail on them weightlessly.
